Choose a Theme

Depending on whether you are hosting an indoor or outdoor party, the theme of your dinner may vary. Select a theme based on a season and the type of food you plan to serve. For example, if you are serving Mediterranean food, try using bright décor, and if you are planning a barbeque, opt for rustic décor. Choose from theme ideas like a retro dinner, casino night, spring party, garden party or even a Hawaiian luau!

Centrepieces

A centrepiece is an absolute must for any dinner party. It must correspond with your theme and liven-up the setting. The perfectly chosen centrepiece can even act as a great conversation starter, so choose wisely. You can try using fresh fruit, flower vases, light-filled jars or candles. Be careful not to go too overboard as they could block your guest’s view and ruin the chance of conversation for the evening.

Crockery and Cutlery

Your first thought may be to simply use whatever odd plates and cutlery you have lying around the house. You must absolutely avoid this! Pick out crockery depending on the type of meal and the different courses you are serving. Try to use complementary coloured plates, side plates and bowls. Be sure to offer each person a spoon, fork, knife and, glasses for both water and drinks.

Lighting

Set the mood for your dinner party with the right lighting. Avoid harsh white lights and instead experiment with fairy lights, candles, lanterns or pastel-coloured lamps. Don’t make the setting too dark, as you want your guests to be able to see each other and all the beautiful and delicious food!

Make a dream board of all your favourite ideas and go crazy setting a dinner table that will have jaws dropping all around!
