A Step-By-Step Guide On How To Drape A Saree

A saree is an irreplaceable and valuable piece of clothing in an Indian woman’s wardrobe. Not only it looks stunning at weddings and parties, but it has also proven to be a definite hit when it comes to casual occasions. However, as much as one would like to flaunt it, it all boils down to how to wear a saree?

You’ll actually be surprised at how easy it is to drape a saree. So, stay with us as we take you through on how to drape a saree step-by-step.

LET’S BEGIN

You can start off by assembling all the essentials you need to keep your saree in place. These are two of the most important things; a bunch of safety pins and a petticoat that matches the colour of your saree. Wearing a mismatched petticoat can look very unappealing if it manages to peak out from under your saree!

MOST IMPORTANT STEP

Another thing to keep in mind before you start draping the saree is to wear your footwear. Without doing so, the length of your saree can become unequal, which can make it unappealing. Ideally, you must stand in front of a full-length mirror, to avoid any mistakes.

HERE IT BEGINS

Step 1: Start by slipping into your petticoat, which should be tightly secured at the waist to prevent the pleats from slipping out. After this, take one end of the saree and wrap it around your waist once, making a complete circle with it, thereby tucking it into your petticoat in front.

Step 2: Now, take the other end of the saree and start pleating from the top, to ensure the pleats are even.  After you’re done, simply put the pleated part over your shoulder, diagonally. This portion is known as the pallu of the saree. Ideally, the length of your pallu should reach the bottom of your hips.

Step 3: The next step is to trace the outer end of the pallu from your bust area, to the back. Bring that part ahead in a manner that it forms a v-shape in front. Take a safety pin and secure it neatly in front to give it a classy look.

Step 4: Now, coming to that part of the saree which is left hanging below, A.K.A the pleating part. You should ideally make 8-10 equal pleats with the help of your fingers. Don’t pleat the entire fabric, just leave behind a couple of inches.

Also, always remember to straighten your pleats by shaking them into place, before tucking them into your petticoat! That extra fabric you were asked to leave comes in use now. Get hold of it from under the pleats, and secure it tightly into your petticoat. This ensures your hip area is accentuated and given a neat look.

 IT’S ALL ABOUT SAFETY PINS!

If you’re not confident about your pleats, grab a safety pin and secure your pleats, keeping them together.

Another trick is to open up pin number one and secure the pleats and the v-shape together with the help of one pin. This assures double safety, even if you end up stepping on the pleats (doesn’t usually happen).

Now, for the pallu, take the next pin and secure it at the sleeves of the blouse. Voila! You’re all set to rock the saree look!

Don’t forget to ensure that the bottom part of your saree is at an equal length with the bottom part of your pleats.

QUICK TIPS TO NAIL THE SAREE LOOK

  • The right place to tie a saree is one inch below the navel
  • Wear your footwear before you start draping to get an idea of the proper length of the saree, it should not be too high nor too low
  • The colour of the petticoat should match with the base colour of the saree
  • Choose a fish-cut pattern petticoat for a flattering look
  • Be careful while securing or removing the safety pins to avoid tearing the saree

You can even drape the pallu all the way to the top to give you a neater look. Now that you have learnt how to wear a saree, it’s time to do it yourself!
